What this covers

A camera inspection is the cheapest way to avoid paying for the wrong repair. A self-propelled camera with a locating sonde travels the lateral, recording pipe material, diameter, joint condition, grade, roots, cracks and blockages, while the locator marks each defect's distance and depth on the surface. It is standard before buying a home, before a major sewer repair, and any time a line has clogged twice.

Signs you need sewer camera inspection

  • Buying a home and want the lateral checked first
  • Repeated main line clogs with no clear cause
  • Contractor recommending a large repair
  • Suspected broken or bellied pipe
  • Illegal or unknown connection found during work
  • Post-repair verification needed

How the work is done

1

Access the line

Through a cleanout, or by pulling a fixture where none exists.

2

Run the camera

Full-length pass recorded, with defects noted as distance from access.

3

Locate above ground

Sonde marking puts each defect's position and depth on the surface.

4

Grade and explain

Footage reviewed with you, and defects ranked by urgency.

5

Send the file

Recorded video and a written summary you can keep or forward.

Local conditions that affect this work

Denver Metro

Metro housing stock is old enough that original galvanised supply lines, cast-iron stacks and clay laterals are all still in service, and pop-top and scrape-off remodels frequently layered new plumbing onto those aging mains.

Front Range

Denver's older neighbourhoods still run galvanised supply and clay sewer laterals under mature street trees, while the newer suburbs are slab-on-grade or shallow crawlspace with PEX. The two profiles fail in completely different ways.

Pikes Peak

The region's rapid post-war and modern build-out means a lot of homes are hitting the 30-to-50-year window where water heaters, polybutylene remnants and original supply lines all come due at once.

Western Slope

The valley mixes older farm properties on wells and septic with in-town housing old enough for original supply lines, so diagnosis here starts with whether the property is on municipal service or its own system.

Sewer Camera Inspection questions

Why should I get a camera inspection before a repair?
Because the repair depends entirely on what is wrong. A clog that is grease needs jetting; a clog caused by a collapsed section needs excavation or lining. Without footage you are authorising work you cannot verify — and a camera pass costs a fraction of the repair.
What does the camera actually show?
Pipe material and diameter, joint offsets, root intrusion, cracks, scale buildup, bellies where water stands, blockages, and whether the line is intact all the way to the city main. The locating sonde adds depth and position on the surface.
Do I need one when buying a house?
It is one of the highest-value inspections available on an older home. Standard home inspections do not scope the sewer lateral, and a failed lateral can be a five-figure repair. Footage also gives you real negotiating leverage.
How long does it take?
A typical residential inspection takes 30 to 60 minutes on site, and you can usually watch the footage live. If a cleanout is missing, add time to access through a fixture.
Can I get the video?
Yes, and you should. Ask for the recorded file and the written report. It documents the line's condition at that date, which matters at resale, for insurance, and if the same defect is repaired later.
