How often should a sump pump be tested?
Twice a year, and before the rainy season. Pour water into the pit until the float triggers and watch the discharge outside. If it does not start, or starts without moving water, the pump or the check valve has failed.
How long does a sump pump last?
Seven to ten years for a decent submersible unit. Cast-iron or stainless housings last longer than plastic. If yours is over eight years old and has never been replaced, treat it as a candidate.
Do I need a backup pump?
If the pit fills during storms and a power cut is realistic, yes. Winter storms are exactly when power goes out, and a primary pump with no backup is useless at the moment it is needed. Battery and water-powered backups both work without grid power.
Why does water flow back into the pit?
A failed or missing check valve. Water in the discharge column runs back down, so the pump recycles the same water and never actually drains the pit. It also shortens pump life dramatically.
Where should the discharge line end?
Well away from the foundation — ideally 10 feet or more, and graded away from the house. Discharging right at the foundation wall simply returns the water to the same soil and can be worse than no pump at all.
